St. George is a Christian martyr who was a soldier in the Roman army and a member of the Praetorian Guard under Roman emperor Diocletian. St. George refused to denounce his faith under the Roman persecutions and was subsequently tortured and beheaded.
Legend also states that while St. George was traveling through Libya he came across Silene where the city was forced to sacrifice a human each day to a horrible dragon. One day the princess was chosen as sacrifice, so St. George slayed the dragon with his lance! As a reward St. George received great treasures from the king, but donated it to the poor. And subsequently, the city became Christian.
